BYD has selected Austria's voestalpine to supply steel sheet for its new passenger car factory in Szeged, Hungary. The agreement makes the steel and technology group one of the first publicly confirmed suppliers for the European manufacturing project.
According to the announcement, deliveries from voestalpine's Linz operation will begin in the autumn. The initial order covers steel for vehicle bodies and exterior panels. BYD points to the supplier's proximity to Szeged as well as its material expertise, while continuing discussions with other potential suppliers across its European markets.
The sourcing decision follows BYD's plan for a European headquarters and research centre in Budapest. In this release, the company says it expects its cars to be available in 29 European countries through more than 1,000 dealer outlets by the end of 2025. Those figures describe the expansion plan at the date of the announcement.
There is also a separate development for members interested in home energy. BYD says Austria will become its first European Union pilot market for Vehicle-to-Home technology, working with a local partner. V2H allows energy stored in a vehicle battery to supply a home through compatible equipment. BYD links its choice of Austria to household interest in solar generation and reports that many visitors to its dealerships ask about the technology.
The pilot announcement leaves the rollout schedule and further project details for a later update. Vehicle compatibility, the required home installation and the eventual operating arrangements will be the practical points to examine as that information arrives. For now, the release records a planned Austrian pilot alongside a concrete supplier agreement for the Hungarian car factory.
