BYD names a Szeged steel supplier and announces an Austrian V2H pilot
BYD has selected Austria's voestalpine to supply steel sheet for its new passenger car factory in Szeged, Hungary. The agreement makes the steel and technology group one of the first publicly confirmed suppliers for the European manufacturing project. According to the announcement, deliveries from voestalpine's Linz operation will begin in the autumn. The initial order covers steel for vehicle bodies and exterior panels. BYD points to the supplier's proximity to Szeged as well as its material expertise, while continuing discussions with other potential suppliers across its European markets. In this release, the company says it expects its cars to be available in 29 European countries through more than 1,000 dealer outlets by the end of 2025. Those figures describe the expansion plan at the date of the announcement. There is also a separate development for members interested in home energy. BYD says Austria will become its first European Union pilot market for Vehicle-to-Home technology, working with a local partner. V2H allows energy stored in a vehicle battery to supply a home through compatible equipment. BYD links its choice of Austria to household interest in solar generation and reports that many visitors to its dealerships ask about the technology. Press photograph supplied by BYD. Vehicle compatibility, the required home installation and the eventual operating arrangements will be the practical points to examine as that information arrives. For now, the release records a planned Austrian pilot alongside a concrete supplier agreement for the Hungarian car factory. BYD chooses Budapest for its European headquarters and research base
BYD plans to establish its European business headquarters in Budapest, supported by a new research and development centre. The company identifies three areas of work for the hub, covering sales and aftersales, vehicle testing and approval, and local vehicle design and feature development. Those responsibilities connect directly with subjects that appear in ownership discussions. Aftersales organisation affects how a growing brand supports its cars, while local testing and development address the requirements of the markets where those cars will be sold. The announcement sets out an organisational commitment to that work, with the detailed results to follow as projects develop. Press photograph supplied by BYD. View photograph and source. The planned headquarters will be in Budapest's eleventh district. It will become BYD's fifth Hungarian location, joining the Komárom bus factory, operations in Fót and Páty, and the passenger car plant under construction in Szeged. The company expects the new activity to create thousands of skilled positions. Research will initially concentrate on two projects, one involving intelligent mobility and the other the next generation of electrification technology. BYD also plans partnerships with at least three Hungarian universities, cooperation with local start-ups and suppliers, and patent development based on work carried out at the centre. It expects at least 90 percent of the centre's staff to have higher education qualifications. Press photograph supplied by BYD. View photograph and source. Local testing, approval and feature development give the Budapest plan a direct connection to the specifications of future European cars. The separate Szeged factory project provides the manufacturing side of the same localisation strategy. Press photographsPhotograph 1Photograph 2Photograph 3Browse the News gallery. DENZA introduces its European plans with the Z9GT and D9
DENZA has used Milan's Brera Design Week to introduce itself to European customers. BYD's premium brand plans to lead its regional expansion with the Z9GT shooting brake, followed by the D9 seven-seat MPV. The presentation brings two different interpretations of electrified family transport into focus. For the Z9GT, DENZA describes a choice between a battery electric powertrain and a Super DM plug-in hybrid. Its e3 platform combines three independently controlled drive motors, an independently controlled rear-wheel steering system, Vehicle Motion Control and Cell-to-Body battery integration. DENZA links these systems to a small turning circle for a large car and the ability to move diagonally during suitable low-speed manoeuvres. Press photograph supplied by BYD. View photograph and source. That combination makes manoeuvrability a useful subject for owners to follow as European specifications emerge. The company is presenting the platform's capabilities at this stage. The precise equipment, software functions and operating conditions available on each European version will shape their everyday usefulness. The D9 takes a different approach, with seven seats and an interior aimed at family and business travel. It extends the launch programme beyond the Z9GT's shooting-brake body style into the large MPV segment. DENZA says both models will combine electrified powertrains with a strong emphasis on cabin comfort and technology. Press photograph supplied by BYD. View photograph and source. The brand began in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler and is now wholly owned by BYD. Wolfgang Egger leads its design direction, while BYD supplies the broader engineering resources behind its new platforms. For forum readers, the Milan announcement establishes the opening model plan for Europe. Local prices, final specifications and delivery arrangements will be the next useful pieces of information when comparing these cars with existing BYD models. BYD plans a passenger car factory in Szeged
BYD has chosen Szeged in Hungary for a new passenger car manufacturing centre, placing local production at the centre of its European expansion. The company says construction will proceed in stages and expects the project to create thousands of jobs, alongside work for regional suppliers. The announcement describes a factory for new energy vehicles, BYD's umbrella term for battery electric cars and plug-in hybrids. It promises a highly automated production line and a local supply chain drawing on the company's experience of making batteries, electric motors and other major vehicle components. BYD says it will release more detailed information about the plant later. For European buyers, the announcement adds a manufacturing project to a business that has so far been building its retail presence. BYD reports that its first year of European passenger car expansion has brought 230 dealer outlets in 19 countries. Its five-model range at this point consists of the HAN and SEAL saloons, the TANG and ATTO 3 SUVs, and the DOLPHIN hatchback. Three further model launches are planned over the following twelve months. Hungary already has an established automotive industry and transport infrastructure, which BYD identifies as reasons for choosing the country. The company also intends to develop local supplier relationships as the Szeged project advances. BYD has established the location and a phased development plan, with assembly models, production capacity and the detailed start-up timetable still to follow. Those details will show how the Hungarian plant connects with the cars offered to European buyers. Press photographsPhotograph 1Browse the News gallery.
